In the service of Louis XIV for more than fifty years, Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de VaubanHe owes his reputation to the citadels and strongholds built according to his plans to protect the kingdom. A tireless man of action, he was also renowned for his often visionary writings.
Mistress of Louis XIV in 1667, the Marquise de Montespan came to the Court thanks to Anne of Austria. This stunningly beautiful woman was feared by the courtiers, thanks to the famous "Mortemart spirit" that characterised her family. She had a great influence on the life of the Court. Passionate about the arts and protected by the king, she occupied a flat close to his. She was ousted around 1680 by Madame de Maintenon and left Versailles for good in 1691.
The Marquis de Vauban inspects the fortifications of Charente-Maritime. He came to the fort of Fouras to check on the progress of work on a military edifice that would bear his name 250 years later.

For around an hour and a half (1H30) you will discover the Fort and its splendid views over the whole of the Fouras roadstead.
